Nicki Mathen began her equestrian education in Switzerland at the formidable age of seven. Spending ample time on the lunge line, Nicki was no stranger to the dirt. She spent the bulk of her childhood falling off, and learning how to pick herself back up, riding lesson horses of every variety. Her breeches were filled with patches sewed on, each one commemorating a fall. Nicki didn’t care, she loved riding so much, even if she spent her days walking hours back from the trails in search of her ride. She would then move on to the renowned barn of Paul Weir for summer programs.
She spent her twenties engulfed in working student programs across Europe at sales barns, working for the likes of Gerhard and Heidi Etter at the prestigious Etter Horses and more. Back in the states, she worked with a myriad of notable trainers; Patty Stoval, Kelly Van Vleck, Alan Waldman, and Susie Hutchinson - whom she still works with at shows.
Nicki started her own business – Copper Hill Show Jumpers - in 2012 where she has continued her working relationship with Alan Waldman importing horses. There are few as great as Nicki when it comes to matching horse and rider. Her extensive history at sales barns, mixed with her adept talent at foreseeing the strengths and capabilities of each rider, Nicki has garnered great success both at home and in the show ring. She has matched many promising teammates and taken countless babies from the young horse classes to the highest jumping ranks.
Copper Hill Show Jumpers - located in Austin, Texas – is home to riders who are competing at all levels in the sport. Nicki travels with her team across the country on a consistent basis, where she has created a safe and nurturing environment for herself, her students and horses to compete, thrive and continuously progress.
Nicki’s favorite part of the sport: the horses. She loves having a relationship with them; riding, watching and just being with them. It inspires and pushes her to be better, always. Her passion is setting goals that she can accomplish with herself and the partner underneath her. She loves to watch her students grow, work hard and enjoy the process of understanding. She is forever striving to be a better horsewoman.
